Visit report: K.J. Costello

The highest-ranked recruit in attendance for Stanford's win over Arizona last weekend also happened to be one of two commits on hand. Rivals100 quarterback K.J. Costello was among the recruits who took in the Cardinal's blowout over the Wildcats.

"It was awesome," Costello said. "It was the first game I've been to this year. It was awesome to see them live again and feel that whole atmosphere and hang out with the players a little bit, get to vibe with the players. It was an awesome weekend.
"I went along with my teammates Dylan Crawford and Brett Neilon and then Curtis Robinson, who's already committed, so we were hanging out the whole time. I really got a good vibe just for the team and the guys. We hung out pregame and watched them warm up and hung out in the locker room and just kind of got the vibe of the guys I'm going to be playing with next year. It was a really good weekend for that. And then we just watched the way they played, an absolutely dominant performance. It was definitely impressive."
Costello and co. spent time with several current Cardinal players, including freshman offensive lineman (and former Santa Margarita offensive lineman) Austin Maihen, running back Christian McCaffrey, offensive lineman Graham Shuler and quarterback Kevin Hogan.
He also had a chance to see his future coaches; Costello has stayed in close contact with several members of the Cardinal staff over the course of his recruitment.
"We're in constant communication," Costello said. "Obviously they're going to give me my time, I'm going to give them their time. But we're talking over game plans week in and week out, what they're trying to do and what I'm trying to do in high school. We're starting to go over just like some simple stuff, kind of game plans and starting conversations, talking a lot of football with Coach Pritchard and Coach bloom as well and Coach Shaw especially, I really like him a lot. He's a head coach but he's very personal with his recruits, with his players, and we're starting to build a really good relationship."
Costello hopes to return to Stanford for another visit soon - he said he'd be up to campus as frequently as possible this year.
He's currently working through Stanford's admissions process.
"I'm in the process of filling out my application right now and should have that sent in pretty soon and then I should hear back pretty quick," Costello said.
If Costello has his way, he won't be the only 2016 prospect from Santa Margarita to sign with Stanford this year. The four-star quarterback has been in Crawford's ear, trying to convince the talented wide receiver to join him on The Farm.
"Dylan Crawford is obviously a big (recruiting target) for me," Costello said. "Playing in the season, there's an obvious connection there, one that I had similar with Kyle Sweet (a former Santa Margarita wide receiver). It's just at the end of the day if we're both on the same page it's pretty hard to stop us. I'd love that to carry on into college. I'm still talking to Demetris Robertson quite a bit. I'm not too sure where that's headed. These guys are all kind of taking their officials and they're going to make their decisions from there. So as of now, right now, i'm just really trying to focus on my season, just like everybody else is."
Costello and his Santa Margarita high school team is currently 4-2. The Eagles did lose their last game to St. John Bosco, one of the nation's top high school teams, but Costello had a solid outing even in defeat, completing 15-23 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns. Costello was limited in the second half with an ankle injury.
On the season, Costello has thrown for 1,517 yards and 14 touchdowns against two interceptions. He's completing passes at 61.2 percent clip.
