On Tuesday morning, Stanford head coach David Shaw named sophomore Tanner McKee the starting quarterback for Saturday’s game at USC. No quarterback rotation. After watching tape of the game against Kansas State, Shaw made the determination that McKee has done enough to earn the starting job over senior Jack West.
Against the Wildcats, McKee went 15-18 for 118 yards, 1 touchdown, and 0 interceptions for a 47.6 QBR (total quarterback rating) and a 156.7 passer rating. West in contrast went 8-12 for 76 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions for a 15.6 QBR and an 86.5 passer rating. The numbers obviously were in McKee’s favor, but there was more to it than just the numbers. McKee clearly passed the eye test and being as highly rated as he was out of high school, it’s really not much of a shock that he’s won the job.
On Sunday, I wrote a piece that listed five reasons for why McKee should start. If you haven’t already read that, click here to check that out.
