St. Brown on Stanford, upcoming visit

2017 Mater Dei High School wide receiver Osiris St. Brown is more familiar with Stanford than most of the Cardinal's 2017 recruiting targets.

That's because Stanford offered and was a finalist for Osiris' older brother, class of 2015 wideout Equanimeous St. Brown, who ended up signing with Notre Dame. (Plus, Osiris is classmates with 2016 Stanford signee Curtis Robinson.)

Osiris accompanied Equanimeous on a Stanford Junior Day trip in the spring of 2014. The Rivals250 standout got a sense for how the Cardinal program approaches recruiting by observing his brother's process.

"He said that, and I even noticed it, too - once Stanford offers you, once they come after you, they really want to come after you," St. Brown said. "They don't just offer a bunch of people... they actually go after you. They came up to my school to see my brother a bunch of times, so I noticed how much they actually respected their offers and their recruits. I really like that about them."

Stanford extended Osiris St. Brown an offer in February, almost two years to the day after they offered Equanimeous. (The Cardinal offered Equanimeous on Feb. 5, 2014. Osiris received his Stanford offer on Feb. 3, 2016.)

"It was huge, honestly," St. Brown said. "I think it was Signing Day. I remember they hit me up and I called them, talked with them. They said they were going to offer me. It was huge - it's always been one of my top schools, even one of my brother's top schools. The fact that they've offered, and I don't think they've really offered many receivers in my class, it's big."

St. Brown stays in regular contact with his area recruiter, Mike Bloomgren, who also recruited Equanimeous. He's also been in touch with quarterbacks/receivers coach Tavita Pritchard and on one occasion, head coach David Shaw.

"He just said he can't wait to get me up there April 1," St. Brown said of Shaw's message.

"Bloomgren, we just talk more on a personal basis. He asks me how I'm doing, how's school, how's football coming along. And shortly I'll talk to him more when I get up there and see him in person."

St. Brown is eager to get a sample of what life would be like should he choose to continue his career on The Farm.

"I think you stay with one of their football players - I just want to see what it's like to be there for a night and see the whole coaching staff, see what it's like to be there," St. Brown said. "I went up there (in 2014) with my brother but I wasn't actually with the players. I'm curious to see what it's going to be like."

Stanford is currently among the schools most involved in St. Brown's recruitment. Notre Dame and several Pac-12 programs are as well.

"The top schools that talk to me a lot and I feel like they're probably going to be my top schools are probably Washington, Stanford, Cal, Notre Dame and Oregon," St. Brown said. "Those schools, they talk to me a lot. Like, I talk to those coaches on at least a weekly basis. Those will probably end up being some of my top schools."

Academic opportunity and early playing time are among the factors St. Brown will most strongly consider when he makes his college decision.

"Education is going to be my first thing - they have one of big educations, just like all of the schools have I'm looking at," St. Brown said. "That and the ability to play early, as a freshman. I don't want to be behind a bunch of other receivers. And the relationship with the coaches - do I feel comfortable there?"
