Schakel on Stanford

Stanford is hoping to add shooting in its 2017 recruiting class, and Southern California wing Jordan Schakel possesses that ability in spades. Couple that with a strong academic background (and a well-rounded hoops skillset), and it's easy to see why he is a player of interest for the Cardinal basketball program.

Stanford started recruiting Schakel after Jerod Haase took over the program a few months ago.

"I think I started hearing from them this year, more toward the end of the school year," Schakel said. "I started speaking with the assistant coaches and then eventually the head coach."

"It was definitely more with the new staff - right when most of the assistant coaches were hired I started hearing from them."

Cardinal assistant Jesse Pruitt has been a primary point of contact.

"(Stanford has told me) they want to see my SAT scores that I took in May and we'll go from there," Schakel said.

If a Stanford offer did materialize, the Cardinal would be taken under strong consideration.

"(My interest would be) high just for the fact that it's just a great school," Schakel said. "There are a lot of opportunities there academically and also basketball as well in the Pac-12. And the new coaching staff has their eyes on doing some big things in the conference."

What currently comes to mind when Schakel thinks of the Stanford basketball program?

"Stanford basketball, when I think about it right away I think of the Lopez Twins from a couple of years ago," Schakel said. "I think of them producing good, academically strong kids and smart basketball players."

Schakel has yet to visit Stanford's campus, but he's considering a summer trip to The Farm.

"I think that there's a good chance that I'll take a visit up there," Schakel said.

"I just want to see the school environment and the coaching staff and how they treat their players and how the players like it. (If I visit I'd want to) speak with the players and (gauge) how they feel their time has been going at Stanford."

San Diego State, Cal and USC are the teams most involved in Schakel's recruitment.

He's thinking of making a fall decision.

"Academics and how I see myself fitting into the university (will factor into my decision)," Schakel said. "The feel of the campus and the people there and how I feel myself fitting in."
