Commitment impact: Silas Starr adds quality depth to WR pipeline

Silas Starr announced his commitment to Stanford late Friday night and it was a great treat to read for Cardinal fans catching up on news Saturday morning. Starr has been on Stanford's radar for more than two years.

He camped at Stanford two straight years and got an offer in December. Wide receiver coach Bobby Kennedy and offensive coordinator Tavita Pritchard hisited his school in Portland several times this spring.

Starr has never said much about his recruiting process and doesn't show off his football skills much outside of when he suits up for Central Catholic. He caught 55 passes his junior season for 1,053 yards and 14 touchdowns.

At The Opening in Oakland he was clocked at 4.67 in the 40 and 4.32 in the shuttle at 6-2, 194 pounds.

His rating according to Rivals and another site has consistently gone down since he started as a consensus Top 100 prospect. But Stanford had plenty of information about Starr when they decided to offer and made him a priority to join the wide receiver class.

Starr joins SoCal commits John Humphreys and Bryce Farrell in the class and Stanford may not be done recruiting the position. The Cardinal are still contenders for Marvin Mims Jr. and recently offer Rome Odunze.

Humphreys has the potential to be a special playmaker because of his size (6-5) and fluid athleticism that typically belongs to a smaller receiver. Farrell is an X-factor because he had a spectacular sophomore season for powerhouse Oaks Christian (63 catches for 1,168 yards and nine touchdowns) but his production plummeted his junior season. He played with an injured hamstring most of that season and the Lions leaned on a dominant run game.

Stanford brought in three talented wide receivers in the 2019 class (Elijah Higgins, Colby Bowman and Marcus Graham) so a 2020 class of Humphreys, Farrell and Starr would be a great addition to a pipeline of talent that has never been stronger at the position.
