Abrams still looking

2013 St. Mary's (Berkeley) recruit Nick Abrams thought he had his college future mapped out. Abrams, a 6-foot-3, 267-pound defensive lineman, was ready to accept an offer from Colorado State a few months ago before learning that the Rams had pulled his scholarship.

"I was surprised at first they had offered me so soon because it was a week or so before the season started," Abrams said. "But it had me excited about my future in college football. As the season continued I didn't receive any more scholarship offers but I was called by coaches from San Jose State and San Diego State. But once I realized I was probably only going to have an offer from Colorado State I tried to call them and see if I could take a tour and possibly commit. After a couple weeks of trying to reach out to CSU I hadn't gotten a call back and was worried what was wrong. At the same time I was invited to play in the California All Star game. The day before I left for the All Star game, I learned that Colorado State was no longer interested with me playing there."

That left Abrams in a tough spot. Many colleges already had their position allotments filled, and Abrams was unable to find a college home before signing day.

He's not done trying, however. Abrams is in touch with a number of football programs at varying levels of competition.

"I'm interested in Menlo college, La Verne, Sacramento State, Portland State, Pace, Wesleyan, Pacific University in Oregon, and St. Thomas in Minnesota," Abrams said. "Those are also the schools I am in contact with."

Abrams is capable of playing an interior position along the offensive line or defensive tackle. Either way, he's determined to be a great addition to the program he selects.

"I will bring a great attitude to a college program along with intangibles like leadership and energy," Abrams said. "I was elected student body president this year, and I have always been excited about football weather its working out at 6 a.m. months before the season or getting ready for game day."

Given the range of schools he's in contact with, Abrams doesn't have a hard deadline for making a decision. He's open to playing at the non-FBS or FCS level to continue his football dream.

He was a starter in the Cal State All Star game (which featured a number of future FBS signees). He also garnered Lineman of the Year honors in the Tri-County Athletic League, Rock Division his senior year, despite encountering double and triple teams on a frequent basis.

Abrams is a full academic qualifier.
