Of the numerous highlights Stanford football has produced in the last decade, one stands above the rest for 2017 Southern California tight end Kyle McCombs.

The St. John Bosco standout, who has closely followed the Cardinal since his half-brother, Jeff Trojan, joined the program, fondly recalls the closing moments in Stanford's upset over then-No. 2 Oregon in 2013. Trojan, of course, sealed the victory with a recovery of a Duck onside kick.

"Probably the most fun moment was a few years ago, the Stanford/Oregon game when it came down to those onside kicks," McCombs said. "And my brother was the one who got to recover those onside kicks, so it was pretty fun to watch that and see all that."

Now, McCombs hopes that he, too, will have an opportunity to join the Cardinal program. Stanford offensive coordinator Mike Bloomgren has been in touch with the St. John Bosco standout over the past few months. And earlier in June, McCombs made the trip north to participate in the Cardinal's all-positions camp.

"Before the camp I talked with Coach Bloomgren, the offensive coordinator, for a little bit," McCombs said. "I (met him) at a few of my practices, and then he told me to call him before I got to camp. After that I was just talking with him at camp.

"He was just showing some interest and making sure that I was coming up to the camp where he could see me in front of his coaching staff."

McCombs worked closely with Cardinal tight ends coach Morgan Turner at the camp.

"I had an amazing experience," McCombs said. "It was probably the most fun camp I went to, because it was so different from all the other camps being in full gear and having those hitting drills going on so that the coaches actually got to see our physicality. Coach Turner is an amazing coach - I loved working with him, and Coach Bloomgren as well. They put us through some duck walks, which were pretty painful at the time, but the in the long run they're going to work out to help us improve our game."

With Colby Parkinson and Tucker Fisk committed, Stanford is no longer in the market for a scholarship tight end in the 2017 class. But the Cardinal could pursue McCombs for a preferred walk-on spot. McCombs said that Bloomgren has communicated that possibility to Trojan.

McCombs has also connected with the Cardinal offensive coordinator since the conclusion of camp.

"I've talked to Coach Bloomgren a little bit since camp," McCombs said. "He hasn't said much other than just that I need to get my test scores up and then that if I ever want to come to any home games just to call him."

McCombs holds offers from Nevada and Army and is fielding interest from the likes of Fresno State, UC Davis, Yale, Harvard and Cornell.

Harvard, Cornell and Nevada are currently among McCombs' top choices, but the tight end prospect would give a Stanford walk-on offer strong consideration.

"It would honestly be one of my top choices if the walk-on offer did come, because I've loved Stanford and I just love the way they run their program and how it's such a great program," McCombs said. "I've talked to my brother's friends that he played with and they've said that it's a great program and they come out of it with friends for life. I want to be able to be a part of that. It would be one of my top choices."
