2016 Introduction: Oluwole Betiku
Like many top high school recruits, 2016 OLB/DE
Oluwole Betiku has football highlights posted to YouTube.
In the video, which is embedded below, Betiku, runs, cuts, and does a variety of drills that one might be likely to witness in a football camp or combine setting.
But there's one difference between Betiku's video and all the others.
His video was shot in Nigeria, where Betiku grew up and lived until 14 months ago. That's when Betiku was discovered at a football camp in Nigeria put on by Xtreme Procision International, which involved former NFL linebacker Lavar Arrington and former Maryland linebacker Ricardo Dickinson.
"It was 10 hours away from my house," Betiku said. "I had to take a bus there. I got there and I showed that I could learn and listen. I grinded. I ran, did all the shuttle runs, everything. For like a week we were working out morning and evening. We were doing drills. No one was going to give up. They wanted to see the best out of the best."
Betiku impressed the camp directors. As a result, he was given the opportunity to continue his studies and his football career in the United States.
"They were always taking offensive linemen. I was just surprised that I was chosen because I wasn't an offensive lineman, just because I just showed the spirit," Betiku said.
Betiku lived on the East Coast for a few months but moved West prior to the start of the academic year because his guardian, Lavar Arrington, took a job out West.
In the months since his arrival in America, Betiku has blossomed into one of the nation's most coveted football recruits. He's been offered by the likes of USC, Penn State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Florida State, among others. Stanford has also expressed interest - one of the Cardinal's assistants paid a visit to Betiku's high school during the December evaluation period - though he hasn't heard from them much recently.
The four-star prospect is aware of Stanford's academic reputation.
"I know they're top class when it comes to education," Betiku said. "That's one of the things I hear all the time, when it comes to education they're like one of the best."
Betiku would likely project as an outside linebacker in Stanford's 3-4 scheme.
"Most schools are saying outside linebacker," Betiku said. "Some schools are saying defensive end. Some schools want me to just stay athletic. Schools that run a 3-4, most of them are saying outside linebacker. Schools that run a 4-3 say defensive end. It all depends. I don't see myself as a guy that is going to be like 280 or 290. Maybe I can be like 250 and that's like an outside linebacker or a defensive end."
Betiku is using a unique set of criteria to help determine his college destination.
"My counselor, she told me just look into the eyes of the coaches and you can read everything," Betiku said. "So most of the time when the coach talks to me, when I ask him questions about the school and everything, I just look straight into his eyes and try tp read the coach and see what he's really about. Because you can really tell a lot by just looking at them straight in the eyes and listening to every word they say and how they really mean it.
"Education is also important for me. Also, I'm looking at the strength program - is it going to get me ready to play against the big boys, to be able to take on those big blocks and everything? And then also the environment, because after football season what am I going to be doing, is there a place I can be happy staying? All those kind of things play into it.
"I just want the best place and the best situation for me, that's all."
Betiku is no hurry to make his college decision.
"I want to narrow it down for my senior season," Betiku said. "I'm just waiting for the spring and seeing if I'm going to get more offers. When spring training is over I'm going to narrow down my list and start thinking of taking my trips. And I'm going to try to go to a few camps this summer."
Betiku said that he recorded a 3.8 GPA last term.
