Cal scored their fifth commit of the 2018 class this afternoon with the commitment of Aquinas OL Jasper Friis. Friis becomes the first offensive commit for Justin Wilcox's staff in 2018, as the first offensive lineman in a class that will need help in the trenches. The 6'7" and 300 lb Friis is a first start to that, as he chose Cal over offers from Dartmouth and UNLV.

Friis, a three-star offensive lineman originally from Munich, Germany, visited the Bears at the beginning of March, where he received his first offer from the Bears. Friis had played football in Munich with a club team, but last year at Aquinas was his first year in a high school program, where he used his size to push guys around on the offensive line.

With a year of development under his belt, Friis has taken to offensive line skills camps in the spring, improving his footwork on the pass rush, something he noted as one of his strengths previously. You can see the development of that below.

Friis, who was recently bumped up to a 3-star lineman by Rivals, has a ways to go before getting to Cal, but the Bears are currently in need of tackle depth and size up front, both things which the German-Brazilian offensive lineman brings to the table. His footwork is rapidly improving, and offensive line coach Steve Greatwood has a great attention to detail on offensive line technique.
