Kahanu Kia's recruiting process changed dramatically over the course of 24 hours when Notre Dame and Stanford two weeks ago. The Fighting Irish offered the Punahou School linebacker Sept. 1 and the Cardinal jumped on board the next day.
“It’s super exciting right now,” Kia said in an interview with BlueAndGold Sept. 3. “These are two of the schools I’ve wanted to go (to) since I was a little kid.”
Kia is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and plans to go on a mission after high school. He is one of three LDS recruits who Stanford has offered in the past month.
Stanford has been recruiting Kia since after his junior season and he met area recruiter Duane Akina after Alaka'i Gilman committed. He began building a relationship with outside linebacker coach Lance Anderson and inside linebackers coach Eric Sanders about a month before he was offered.
"Stanford is a school I have had on my mind for a while now," he said in a direct message to Cardinal Sports Report. "I really value education and football and Stanford is one of if not the premier school for both."
Kia took part in a virtual visit Saturday: "It was definitely an eye opening experience! Along with the the football and academics, they really pushed the culture of the school and the program and how everyone is just all in, self motivated. It was a great experience."
In addition to Stanford and Notre Dame, he has been offered by Utah, UCLA, Washington State, Colorado, Arizona and several Ivy League schools.
