Stanford made it official Wednesday morning that former Buffalo Bills assistant offensive line coach Terry Heffernan will be the next offensive line coach for the Cardinal.

Kevin Carberry spent three seasons as the position coach and run game coordinator and has accepted the offensive line coach position with the LA Rams. He spent one season on the same staff with Rams head coach Sean McVay in Washington in 2016.

"Terry comes to us with great experience from both the NFL and college," head coach David Shaw said. "Early in the interview process we saw that he is a perfect fit to our staff. He's a high character family man, a detailed teacher and brings great energy to the offensive line room.

"I love the fact that he has been an offensive coordinator as well. Terry can teach the details of technique up front, and also engage in strategy and offensive philosophy with our staff. We are excited to have him on board."

Heffernan comes to The Farm following two years with the Buffalo Bills, helping them to the AFC Championship Game during the 2020 season. In total, he has five years of NFL coaching experience, having spent three seasons (2013-15) with the Detroit Lions.

"My family and I are incredibly excited to get to California and join the Stanford family," Heffernan said. "As I was doing my research throughout the interview process, I really got a feeling how special of a place Stanford is without even stepping foot on campus.

"I'm thankful to Coach Shaw for this great opportunity. I can't wait to meet the other coaches and student-athletes and get to work."

Heffernan also brings 12 years of collegiate coaching experience to Stanford, having most recently served as Eastern Kentucky's assistant head coach and offensive line coach in 2016-17, before a promotion to associate head coach and offensive line coach in 2018.

Prior to his time with the Lions, Heffernan spent six seasons at Wayne State. The first five he was the offensive line coach before moving to offensive coordinator in 2012.

Before his time at Wayne State, he served as a graduate assistant coach at both Louisville (2004-05) and Michigan (2005-07).

Heffernan graduated from Dayton with a degree in communications in 2003 and was a four-year football student-athlete.
