Junior Day Report: Chaz Ah You

MORE: Detailed recruiting and player notes from Junior Day and The Opening Oakland

One of the nation's top safety prospects visited Stanford last weekend for the Cardinal's Junior Day. Utah standout Chaz Ah You, who earned an offer from the Cardinal last summer, was accompanied on the trip by his mother.

"It went really well," Ah You said. "I was able to go down there with my mom. She was able to see it for the first time. They give a really good pitch over there. I liked a lot. My mom loved it as well."

"The highlights - we were able to go and see all of the buildings as well as their (LDS) institute. It was really good to see all of those things."

The visit did not mark Ah You's first time on campus - his performance at the Cardinal's camp last summer prompted his scholarship offer - but it did make a strong first impression on his mother.

"I won't say everything that she told me, but she loved it a lot," Ah You said. "She loved the coaches and how they treated her as well, made her feel important. She's really big on education, which Stanford obviously has."

The trip also included discussion of the Cardinal's admissions process.

"They talked about admissions and everything," Ah You said. "They said they want me to take my time on the ACT, take it as many times as I can. They said to keep taking it over and over, so admissions should be pretty good."

Ah You's potential future position coach at Stanford is longtime DB instructor Duane Akina. The renowned secondary coach has emphasized his desire to work with Ah You during their interactions.

"He's always telling me that he loves me and something he's said every time I talk to him is that he's going to coach me hard and love me hard," Ah You said. "That's very important."

Overall, the visit afforded Ah You the chance to get a stronger feel for the academic opportunities Stanford provides.

"The biggest takeaway was I really got an insight into their education," Ah You said.

In addition to Stanford, UCLA is another strong contender in Ah You's recruitment.

"I'm really liking them a lot as well with everything they've been telling me," Ah You said.

"They're still toward the stop of my list."

BYU, where his father works as the Director of Football Athletic Relations, also figures to be a consideration, as do other Pac-12 programs and Notre Dame.

Ah You doesn't plan to commit until after his senior season, but he might release a top five this summer.
