2016 Stanford defensive back commit Nygel Edmonds received a major piece of news about his college future a few weeks back. The longtime Cardinal pledge received word that he had been admitted to Stanford.
"It was kind of a load off my back," Edmonds said. "I've been working so hard to get to that point throughout these last couple of years. I was definitely very excited."
Edmonds, who committed to Stanford in April, has stayed in touch with several Cardinal coaches. Defensive coordinator Lance Anderson, head coach David Shaw and Associate AD, Director of Recruiting & Football Relations Mike Eubanks have been among his primary points of contact.
Shaw was expected to make an in-home visit with Edmonds on Thursday.
"Oh man, it's been great," Edmonds said of his relationship with Stanford. "I'm still strong with my commitment. Just blessed to be able to be in in this position that I'm in right now. We're just trying to finish this through and take it day by day until Signing Day."
"We're just kind of talking about me staying healthy, making sure I continue to do great in school. Make sure I'm ready for the 2016 season at Stanford."
Though Edmonds was not able to make it down to The Farm for a game visit this season, he did keep close tabs on the Cardinal from afar.
"I've been following every game this season," Edmonds said. "I've watched every game. I haven't had the opportunity to make it up to a game, but I wish I could have. I've especially liked watching the defensive backs. I've been trying to picture myself in their spots, the corners and some of the safeties, too, just because I get that feel of how it's going to be next year, if I could see myself playing there. And every time I watch it I just get chills, because I'm like, 'Man, I could be in that same position next year.' I'm just excited."
Edmonds plans to visit Stanford next month for the Cardinal's big recruiting weekend. He doesn't currently have other trips planned.
The visit could shed additional light on his role within the Cardinal defense next season. Edmonds currently anticipates beginning his career at cornerback, but that could change if he continues to add size.
"Right now they're saying corner but if I get a little bit bigger - I've been getting bigger from my junior year to my senior year - they said if I get a little bigger I might even play some free (safety)," Edmonds said. "So they (could) kind of move me around the defense a little bit. I'm not sure exactly what position I'm going to 100 percent play my freshman year, so I'm kind of waiting on that."
Edmonds has already been working to add to diversify his skillset as a defensive back.
"I would probably say just my confidence in playing off the ball (has improved this year)," Edmonds said. "I've always been a press corner, lockdown and everything. This year I wanted to challenge myself to play off the ball and I did a lot better this year than I did my junior year, so I felt like that was one of the biggest things I progressed in."
