On Wednesday, Stanford men’s basketball announced the signings of 2022 4-star small forwards Ryan Agarwal and Jaylen Thompson. Agarwal comes from Coppell High School in Coppell, Texas while Thompson comes from Southern California Academy in Los Angeles, California. Thompson has Bay Area roots, originally hailing from Oakland.

Both Agarwal and Thompson project to provide Stanford with length and athleticism out on the wing. As a tandem, they should provide a nice blend of shooting, scoring, defense, and an ability to get others involved. They’re very well-rounded players that can do a lot of different things on the court.

In the release on GoStanford.com, Stanford head coach Jerod Haase had great things to say about both players:

"Jaylen is someone we believe has tremendous upside and is a great fit for our program. He is already an elite perimeter defender, with great length, quickness, and athleticism. He has made huge strides offensively as of late, proving he can score from the 3-point line, but also put the ball on the floor and score on the interior. His ceiling is sky high, and we are so excited for his future on the Farm."

"We have recruited Ryan for a long time, and are thrilled to welcome him to the Farm next year. His skillset is unique for someone with his size. He passes the ball well, has a great feel for the game, and is an excellent 3-point shooter. On the defensive end, he is extremely versatile with great length and quickness. Like Jaylen, he is passionate about the game and improving."

If Harrison Ingram does indeed decide to leave for the NBA after his freshman year at Stanford, Agarwal and Thompson should get minutes early and also be able to help fill the void left by his departure. If Ingram decides to stay and come back for his sophomore year to boost his NBA draft stock even further, Agarwal and Thompson will add even more depth at the wing position, making Stanford even deeper and more talented than they already are this year.
