Stanford lands Swann

Stanford added a key piece to its 2016 defensive line recruiting class on Tuesday when three-star Indiana defensive lineman Jovan Swann announced his commitment to the Cardinal. Swann also announced that he has been admitted into the university.

Swann picked the Cardinal over finalists Northwestern and Indiana. He also had offers from Michigan State, Iowa, North Carolina, Vanderbilt and several others.

With Stanford signing only four scholarship defensive linemen in its last three recruiting classes, the position has been a major focus for the duration of the 2016 cycle. Swann joins Thomas Schaffer, Bo Peek and Mike Williams as 2016 defensive linemen committed to the Cardinal.

Stanford offered Swann in August, and the Cardinal made an immediate impression.

"It was quite incredible," he told Cardinal Sports Report at the time. "Getting an offer from such a prestigious school, one of the top premier schools academically in the nation, it truly stands out from all the rest of the offers that I have received. (It's) a blessing to be able to achieve something like that, just an offer from that standpoint is, in my mind, it's top in my list of things that I've achieved, for sure. They have a great priority with me, surely, as I look forward to visiting them here in the near future and learning more about them with this process."

The next major step in Stanford's pursuit of Swann came a few months later, when the three-star standout took his official visit to The Farm to watch the Cardinal beat Arizona. The trip made a strong impression.

"Stanford is my No. 1," Swann said at the time. "At this point in my recruiting process, after taking that official visit, talking to my parents, I've spoken with my coaches - and I think at the end of the day I'll still have to deliberate and pray on my final decision - but Stanford sits very high with me, especially after that official visit. And I may not have to take another one."

Swann did end up taking additional visits - to Northwestern and Indiana - and his other finalists made strong pushes. But ultimately, the Cardinal was able to land the talented Midwest defensive lineman.
