Priority running back target EJ Smith announced his top five schools Sunday and Stanford made the cut. That was not a surprise because even though he is understandably quiet about his recruiting process (he's the son of Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith) it was reported on Cardinal Sports Report that he had a successful junior day visit this spring.
Smith is listed as an "athlete" on Rivals because he is capable of playing wide receiver in college. Stanford agrees and he has been compared to Connor Wedington because, even though he spends most of his time at running back in high school, he can excel out wide as well.
Stanford has its eyes set on capturing a big prize at running back in this class. Kalel Mullings camped at Stanford Tuesday and attended the junior day Wednesday. Mullings and Smith are one of three offers at the position (four star Mike Drennen II is the other) and the hope is to land two.
Any pairing among the three would be a major win and fears of overcrowding the position is eased by the versatility of each recruit. Mullings is a linebacker on a number of recruiting boards across the country and Drennen is just as capable, if not more so, at receiver than Smith.
