Stanford lands Alabama FB

2016 fullback Bailey McElwain's future has taken a considerable turn within the last week. A few days ago, while he was on the radar of several football programs, the Alabama native was still without a college football scholarship offer as he prepared to make the long journey to the West Coast to participate in Stanford's camp.
Now, on the heels of a standout performance at camp, McElwain is committed to Stanford on a full-ride football scholarship.

McElwain committed to the Cardinal yesterday and announced his decision via Twitter on Saturday morning.
I'm Committed! Excited for what's ahead! #CardClass16 🌲- Bailey McElwain (@beemac99) June 20, 2015
"I sat in the film room and watched the highlight tape for a little bit" McElwain said. It was about 15 minutes. And then Coach Taylor and the offensive coordinator spoke with me. We got to sit down for a little while. (Then) I met with Coach Shaw. He was like, 'We're just going to get to the (point): You have a scholarship offer.'"
McElwain committed on the spot.
"As soon as he offered me I asked Coach Shaw if it was committable," McElwain said. "He said, 'Heck yeah, it is.' I told him, 'I'm committed.' He was like, 'Wow,' and he stood up and he shook my hand. We were out in the hallway and he talked to one coach and he screamed it down the hall, and he was like freshly offered, freshly committed. All the coaches came out there and they were all congratulating me. It was awesome."
"It feels really good because it was my first offer and knowing that's where I want to be is just great. It's awesome how they see it in me like no other school did, and it's such a big school and it's so great academically and athletically with football. So it means a lot to me."
McElwain was accompanied on the trip by his mother, who became emotional upon learning of the Stanford offer and ensuing commitment.
"She started crying," McElwain said.
While Stanford was McElwain's first offer, it wasn't necessarily a big surprise.
"I've kind of been expecting it," he said. "(Coach Taylor) told me that they were really fired up about me. He had been telling me this for a while. They were really fired up about me. I just had to get out to camp and show myself. It's paid off, my hard work has paid off. I've been working hard and I believe it's going to work for the best."
McElwain started hearing from Stanford in the spring. Cardinal running backs coach (and Alabama area recruiter) Lance Taylor paid a visit to McElwain's high school during the spring evaluation period and things progressed from there.
"Coach Lance Taylor started recruiting me around April," McElwain said. "He called my coach and told him that he was coming down to the school just to eyeball me and see how I fit and how I look, how I run, how I move in workouts, stuff like that. He watched me work out. We stayed in contact and he told me he really wanted me to get me up to camp. He kind of pounded at that for a while. He got on the phone with my mom while we were talking and we just made it happen to come down to camp."
McElwain found the camp sessions to be informative.
"I feel like I learned a lot about their coaching style," McElwain said. "I got to see the facilities, too, how they practice, the kind of plays they run. stuff like that."
"I got to speak with all the coaches. I got to meet - I had never met them besides Coach Taylor. I really liked meeting the coaches. It was a great experience."
McElwain plans to get started working through Stanford's admissions process after returning home from his trip.
"We had about a 45 minute meeting about admissions and the application and stuff like that so it's already coming along fast," McElwain said. "We're already going to start working on it as soon as we get home, so it's in full force."
