Cuero, Texas prospect Jordan Whittington has been collecting offers at an impressive rate, and the 2019 wide receiver learned Tuesday he could add Stanford to the list.

“Getting offered by Stanford, and how prestigious they are with academics is off the charts, it was an amazing feeling,” he said. “I know they can get you where you want to be. At some point football is going to be over. If you got that degree you can pretty much go do whatever you want.”

The off the field appeal of Stanford has made an impression on Whittington, and on the field he has been offered as a wide receiver. As a sophomore he was effective no matter how he got the ball.

He had 39 carries for a total of 361 yards and four touchdowns. As a receiver, he caught 45 passes for 795 yards and 12 touchdowns.

“I told them (the Stanford coaches) I preferred offense and they all watched my film as a staff and the offensive coaches liked me a lot,” he said.

But Whittington also was credited with six interceptions, according to Maxpreps, and his main contact so far in his recruitment, Duane Akina, may be tempted to sway him to switch to the defensive backs room. Whittington returned two interceptions for touchdowns, two punts and a kickoff for a total of 21 scores.

His versatility is reflected by his mindset about the game: “I’m elusive, I’ll listen and I’ll get you what you want and more in multiple ways.”

Whittington said he is aware of Akina’s legacy in Texas and in a short period of time -- they first talked three days ago -- he already feels they have a “good relationship.”

“He knows Texas,” Whittington said. “I don’t know how to explain it any better. He knows talent when he sees it.”

Whittington comes from a family of football players. His brother, Quincey, played at SMU, and his uncle, Arthur, also played at SMU before winning a Super Bowl in 1980 with the Raiders.

“My goal is to be the best out of the family,” he said.

Whittington has a timeline in mind for his recruitment, and with reported offers already from schools such as Georgia, LSU, Ohio State, UCLA, Oregon, Texas A&M, Ole Miss and TCU, he will work to put together a visit schedule.

The fact that his mother’s side of the family lives in California is a “big help.”

“I have to visit all my top schools and now Stanford is one of my top schools,” he said. “So, I have to visit them as well and then I’ll have a top eight. From there I’d like to commit the summer after my junior season.”
