2017 Palma High School offensive lineman Drew Dalman saw a different side of Stanford when he visited for the Cardinal's late-February Junior Day.
Dalman, whose father is former Stanford player and coach Chris Dalman, had previously been to campus on numerous occasions, but hadn't before gotten such an in-depth look at the program from the perspective of a recruit.
"I really liked it," Dalman said. "It's obviously a special place. And the guys that were up there, the players as well as the recruits, were really cool guys. The recruit perspective was really cool. They treated us well and showed us everything Stanford has to offer academically and with the football team, so it was a great experience."
"From the beginning they had us all meet in the meeting rooms, so I was in there with all of the other recruits. They had the virtual reality set up an they invited us all to go up there. The other recruits and I jumped in and took a look at that and got to talk to those guys as well as see the virtual reality training. That was probably the highlight, meeting some of those other guys that had similar goals, who wanted to go and play college football and all that good stuff."
Dalman got a better sense for his potential future position coach, Mike Bloomgren, and Bloomgren's teaching style during the trip, as well as some of the next steps of Dalman's process with the Cardinal.
"We spent some time watching film with Coach Bloomgren," Dalman said. "I really liked him. I like how he coached and all aspects of that. As far as where I'm at, they just said that they're interested and I'm interested as well and they want to see me at camp. That's about the extent of things so far. But it was great seeing the coaches."
Dalman was accompanied by several family members, including Chris, on the visit. But while Chris has spent plenty of time on The Farm in various capacities over the years, even he was surprised by some of the changes on campus.
"There were a couple of times where he'd point out something back when he was there or when he was coaching," Drew Dalman said. "I was kind of surprised he pointed out a lot of things that were new that had popped up since he had left Stanford. It was kind of interesting to see how fast the university is changing and getting better."
About a week after the Stanford Junior Day, Dalman added his first Pac-12 scholarship offer, from Colorado.
"It was awesome," Dalman said. "Coach McIntyre called me during school, so I got that news about the middle of my lunch period and I was pretty excited and all my friends were around me. It was good to have some tangible evidence of hard work paying off and getting to see what my college career could turn into as far as schools go."
