2018 Plant High School jumbo athlete Judge Culpepper is a part of one of the nation's more interesting football families. His father, Brad, starred at Florida and played in the NFL before settling into a successful post-football career as a trial lawyer. His older brother, Rex, was a quarterback in the 2016 class who signed with Syracuse. His mother, Monica, competed on two seasons of the reality TV show "Survivor" - one alongside Brad.
Judge Culpepper, however, is making his own name. He's still a high school sophomore but already holds offers from dozens of programs. Stanford has yet to offer, but the Cardinal has expressed interest.
"I think it's great," Culpepper said of his relationship with Stanford. "Coach Bloomgren came down and he (recruits) our area. I talked with him a bunch of times - he's a really cool coach. I think Stanford's awesome."
"He says he likes what he sees and you know how Stanford takes it slow because of everything they do... He came out to my practice and he seemed to be impressed."
Though his recruiting relationship with Stanford is still in the early stages, Judge has actually visited The Farm before. He accompanied Rex on a visit in the summer of 2014 when Rex participated in a camp with the Cardinal.
"Honestly, Stanford is super impressive," Culpepper said. "The campus is amazing, the facilities are top of the line... Everything is just great there. It was cool."
A return trip is a possibility.
"It would be good to see it again and kind of refresh myself," he said.
Culpepper likes what he knows about the Cardinal program.
"Obviously the academics are incredible and all of that is great," Culpepper said. "But it's just a great football school, a great academic school. It's one of the most well-rounded schools in the country if not the (most well-rounded school in the country)."
Culpepper currently holds offers from the likes of Florida, Georgia, Michigan, USC and many others. Stanford would be taken under consideration if they extend an offer.
"Obviously they'd be high up there," he said. "But it's early - I'm only a sophomore, so I haven't really made any decisions yet or anything like that."
Though Culpepper is listed as a tight end by Rivals.com and has received the bulk of his recruiting attention at that position, a number of schools are recruiting him as a defensive prospect.
"I play a lot of d-line - I'm really working on that a lot," Culpepper said. "North Carolina likes me at d-line, and Wake Forest likes me at d-line. And a lot of places are starting to see that I can play more than tight end. There have been a couple of schools that have offered me at both, but it's a mixed bag.
Culpepper believes Stanford likes him as a defensive linemen.
He doesn't have a preference between the two positions.
'Not at all," he said. "I love both of them."
Academic strength and a school's desire to have Culpepper join their program will be among the factors considered.
"The academics have to be there and I just want someplace that wants me as bad as I want to go there, so pretty much whoever wants me the most and wants to (get me into) their system is the place that I want to go to," Culpepper said.
