Change of plans for Irwin?

Rivals 100 wide receiver Trent Irwin still favors Arizona State and Stanford, but the four-star prospect's decision timeline has likely changed. While Irwin had long planned to make a verbal commitment in August, it now appears he will likely wait at least a few more months before making a college decision.

"Trent is so 50/50 on Arizona State and Stanford that he may end up waiting," said Irwin's father, Craig. "We thought we could figure out the whole thing by early-August, but it looks like he may wait until the season. He's really at an absolute tie."

UCLA offered Irwin a scholarship last week and other big-name schools could be close to offering, but Craig Irwin said that he doesn't envision Trent's finalists changing.

"It's really just Stanford and Arizona State," Craig said. "It's not getting any closer. It keeps seeming to be harder. They both have awesome things about them. So no, I don't think the UCLA offer really affects him much… Really no one else can get him. I don't care if Alabama calls and offers. It wouldn't make a difference."

Why are Arizona State and Stanford still the teams to beat?

"Stanford was always the No. 1 school we wanted to go to and we always wanted to play with Brady White more than anything," Craig said. "The great coaches at ASU (are also appealing)."

"We've invested in both Arizona State and Stanford," Irwin said. "We love the coaches there."

Craig added that the ability to enroll early at Arizona State would be a bonus for the Sun Devils.

Irwin plans to take official visits to Arizona State and Stanford this fall before making a decision, which could come as soon as November.

"I think we're probably going to do an official to both Stanford and Arizona State," Craig said. "I think we're going to probably wait. It's not for sure, but his mom really loves the idea of Stanford and she hasn't really been up there to talk to anybody, so he might do an official to Stanford while we come up and visit maybe with some coaches. And then probably we'll do the same thing with Arizona State, and then at that point he'll make a decision."

"We're probably going to do one visit to Stanford and one visit to Arizona State and that would be it… So then that would take it all the way back until probably our first chance to commit would be November 9th-ish."

The quality of quarterbacks at Arizona State and Stanford does not figure to play a significant role in Irwin's thought process. While he is obviously familiar with Brady White's ability, Irwin actually met 2014 Stanford quarterback commit Keller Chryst on a spring visit to The Farm; Irwin and his family hold Chryst's talents in high regard.

"He seems like a great kid," Craig Irwin said of Chryst. "Him being there is very positive for Stanford because he's a major talent. We've seen tape on him, we know who he is. He's great. We're not worried about Stanford having a great quarterback. They got a great quarterback. Most of these schools - even UCLA, Josh Rosen is a great quarterback. Obviously Keller is pretty special, but it isn't really about the quarterback position, because I think all of them will have real good quarterbacks, especially now that Arizona State has Brady. It's just that the kids have a special bond. And they're not just quarterback and wide receiver, they've been best friends for seven, eight years. They do everything together. So that's what makes it tough. And then Stanford being the unbelievable school to go to… we have tons of really, really academic friends who cannot get in to Stanford. And they're like, 'Oh my god, you have to go to Stanford.'"

"That's sort of where it's at. I wish the commitment was forthcoming, but I believe it's not. We're going to call Coach Shaw and the coaches at Stanford and try to set up a visit, maybe in the early part (of the season). I think we might be going to the Notre Dame game for Arizona State."

"It's absolutely 50 percent either way. We see him hang out with Brady every day, we have had an incredible connection with him for years. And Stanford is Stanford."
