Rivals 100 wing picks Stanford

Stanford landed one of its top targets in the 2015 recruiting class on Tuesday when Rivals 100 wing Marcus Sheffield committed to the Cardinal.

Sheffield announced his decision on his twitter account at around 11:45 Pacific Time.

"I called them today and I told them I wanted to commit," Sheffield said. "Everybody was excited - I was excited, they were excited. It was a good thing."

Sheffield is the first 2015 prospect to verbally commit to the Cardinal; his addition continues Stanford's run of recent recruiting success.

The Cardinal signed a top-15 class last year that included four Rivals 150 players, headlined by McDonald's All American Reid Travis.

Stanford assistant coach Mike Schrage was the lead recruiter on three members of Stanford's 2014 class (four-stars Reid Travis, Robert Cartwright and Michael Humphrey). Schrage, an Atlanta native, also led the Cardinal's pursuit of Sheffield, an Atlanta-area product.

Sheffield committed to the Cardinal shortly after he got word that he had been accepted into the school.

"It's a special opportunity that not many people get a chance to have, so I want to take advantage of it," Sheffield said.

"I just felt like it was a good place for me. The coaches were nice, the team was nice. I liked it when I was up there on the visit."

Sheffield selected the Cardinal over offers from Georgia, Clemson, Florida State, Maryland, Kansas State, Xavier and Houston, among others.

"Just everything about it (prompted my commitment)," Sheffield said. "The academic side of it, the basketball side of it. They have good people. So I just wanted to commit."

The four-star wing thinks he'll fit in well with the Cardinal's system.

"They play a good style of offense, a style that I like to play in and they develop their players - they have a good team," Sheffield said. "They went to the Sweet 16 last year. I think I could fit in well."

Sheffield said that he wants to major in computer science at Stanford. And while he'll have to wait nearly a year before his college career gets underway, the Chattahooche High School standout is eager to join the Cardinal program.

"What I'm most excited about is that this is a new chapter in life, and I'm just ready for it," Sheffield said.
