Veach talks Stanford commitment

Arizona outside linebacker Lane Veach didn't take very long to mull over his scholarship offer from Stanford. About three weeks after receiving an offer from the Cardinal, Veach made a verbal commitment to Stanford. He announced his decision on his twitter account Monday night.

"We had a meeting with my family members and my head coach from my high school," Veach told Cardinal Sports Report after making his choice. "We all got together and then I had a conference call with Coach Shaw. We called him up and then I committed He was really excited."

Veach committed to Stanford over offers from Arizona, Air Force, Northern Arizona, Montana and Northern Colorado. He had also received interest from Arizona State, among others.

"I just felt like no other place could really beat out Stanford because of the education and the athletics as well," Veach said. "They're top in both of those and I just felt like it was the place for me."

Attending Stanford's summer camp in late June was a pivotal time in his recruitment. Not only did the camp provide an opportunity for Veach to prove his talents to the Cardinal coaching staff, but spending several days on campus working with the coaches made a lasting impression on the talented linebacker recruit.

"I really liked the coaching staff," Veach said. "They really accepted me and I felt like it was the right place to be. I felt at home there even though I had never been there before, and it just felt really right for me."

Veach's commitment to Stanford concludes his relatively short recruitment. Veach, who didn't pick up his first BCS offer until May, saw his recruitment get off to a slow start largely due to a broken wrist he suffered a week before the start of his junior season. The injury forced Veach to miss all but five games of the 2012 campaign, and created some uncertainty in his college plans.

"It's been really crazy," Veach said. "Of course I wanted to play a lot whenever I was hurt. And then I went out there and did the best I could not knowing what was going to happen. I knew I was going to (need to) have a big senior season if I wanted to go anywhere big. Stanford picked me up, they saw me before my senior season. Then I went out and performed at their camp and came out with an offer. It's been really exciting."

Veach doesn't plan to take any official visits other than a trip to Stanford.

"I think I'm shutting everything down right now," Veach said.

He plans to start working on his Stanford application soon.

"I believe I'm going to be receiving one of those in the mail in a couple of days," Veach said. "Coach Anderson and I have talked about it. I'm looking forward to completing it."

He's glad to have his decision behind him.

"It's kind of relieving," Veach said. "I probably could have waited it out and I might have picked up a couple more offers, but I just felt like Stanford is the right place and I felt like it was the time to make a decision."
