D.C. lineman names leader

Washington D.C. may not be an area that Auburn typically recruits heavily, but that is changing this year as the Tigers are after one of the top offensive tackles in the country in Ballou's Jamar Lewter.

Lewter has a top five right now, but one team stands atop that list.

That team is Auburn.

"They are at the top, my No. 1", said the highly-recruited lineman.

Although Lewter hasn't visited Auburn yet, the coaching staff, in particular offensive line coach Jeff Grimes, have made an impact on the D.C. standout.

"Talking to their coaches, they seem pretty decent", Lewter said. "They want to get me down there to see the campus."

The 6-foot-7, 285-pound lineman also says that playing time is an important factor in his recruitment, and it's something Auburn may have going for it as they will start four seniors on the offensive line in 2010.

"They said it was looking like I could come in and play early, and get everything started," said Lewter.

Lewter was born in Richmond, Va. before moving to Washington D.C. The appeal of playing in the SEC is something that appeals to most recruits, but Lewter is more focused on his education.

Lewter said he wants to go to a school where he can get a good education. Grimes has emphasized he can do that at Auburn.

"I want to major in engineering", Lewter said. "Auburn is one of the top engineering schools in the country."

The rest of Lewter's top five is North Carolina, USC, Rutgers and Illinois.

The big offensive lineman hasn't had an opportunity to take many visits yet, but plans to make the rounds in June. Lewter says he plans to visit Florida, Rutgers, Clemson, North Carolina and Auburn.

Lewter doesn't plan to make an early decision. He said it was more likely he would make a commitment in January, or around Signing Day.
