Walton and CSU exchange visits
The Colorado State Rams have used an unofficial visit and several other contacts to show their interest in Raton (NM) quarterback Dustin Walton and it appears the feeling is mutual. The 6-foot-4, 223-pound signalcaller has the Rams in his top three currently.
Last season Walton led the Raton Tigers to a 10-2 record and a state, Class 3-A semi-final appearance. Walton was the field general of the Tigers' spread offense, completing 64 percent of his passes a year ago for 3,381 yards, 39 touchdowns and nine interceptions. As a sophomore, he completed 50-of-73 passes for 743 yards and eight scores.
Walton holds an offer from Colorado State and was impressed by Fort Collins, the CSU campus and the football program.
"I as impressed with everything," Walton said of CSU. "They are starting to turn the corner. I was really impressed with Fort Collins. Everyone was real nice. I was really, really impressed with the campus. I thought everything was right there where I would be taking classes and going to football. I felt good about it. It had a good vibe. On my list they have to rank first right now because they are my only offer. But overall, probably second or third."
In addition to his visit to Fort Collins, Walton also hooked up with Colorado State quarterbacks coach Daren Wilkinson last month in Raton. The CSU quarterbacks coach watched Walton throw and Walton said Wilkinson told him he was pleased with his arm strength. Walton said he also talks to Wilkinson on the phone once-a-week and the two exchange email more often than that.
Wilkinson is hardly the only coach to see Walton throw. While Walton holds just one scholarship offer, he has several other schools wanting to see him throw in-person before extending an offer.
"I had New Mexico here last Monday," Walton said. "They didn't have me throw. They don't have much interest in me, I don't fit their program very well, but they want to keep their eye on me. New Mexico State was here Wednesday. They didn't have me throw, but they want me to come to camp. I am not sure what they want me to do. It seems like they want me to go to camp so bad that they just want my money. I am not really considering them right now.
"Arizona State will be here this week. They are really interested but he said he needed to see me throw before he committed to me. I understand that. Alabama said they will be here next week sometime. Also, Kansas will be here in the fourth week of May."
Walton said he will also be in Los Angeles at the end of the month for the finals of the Steve Clarkson Dream Maker Camp and then will throw for UCLA as well.
Right now, Walton has Arizona State on top of his list of favorites and said he isn't afraid to get too far away from home for college. He added he is enjoying the process and having a lot of fun seeing new campuses and meeting new coaches.
"The whole process is quite a ride," Walton said. "It is pretty awesome to be a part of it. I am looking for more things to come, more offers and we'll see how it goes."
