2014 Recruiting Breakdown: Defense

CardinalSportsReport.com Though Stanford's defense has established itself as one of the best units in the nation, the Cardinal does have several needs to address on defense in the next recruiting cycle. Here's a look at some of Stanford's priorities and targets on the defensive side of the ball of the 2014 recruiting class.
Defensive line Though Stanford's four-player 2012 defensive line class should provide the program quality depth moving forward, the absence of defensive linemen from the 2013 class will likely make the position a priority again in 2014. And, early returns are encouraging about some of Stanford's top 2014 prospects. Perhaps no recruit in the entire 2014 class has been as enthusiastic about Stanford as four-star defensive end Nifae Lealao. Texas star Solomon Thomas has also expressed significant interest in the Card, and has already taken two unofficial visits to The Farm. Andrew Trumbetti and Andrew Brown are also defensive end targets. Trumbetti in particular has expressed interest in making a trip to Palo Alto. At nose tackle, Bryan Mone is one of Stanford's top targets. We feel that he's one of the best players in the nation regardless of position. Mone committed to Michigan earlier today, but there is plenty of time for Stanford to make a run at him before signing day. Georgia tackle Dontavius Russell was also recently offered by Stanford.
